About This Course

This comprehensive Grade 2 Creative Activities course is a complete, play-based, learner-centred programme designed to build on Grade 1 skills while further nurturing creativity, physical coordination, musical expression, artistic techniques, and appreciation in young learners. It fully aligns with the official Kenya Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) for lower primary education. Through engaging hands-on experiences using locally available, low-cost materials, learners strengthen key competencies such as creativity and imagination, communication and collaboration, self-efficacy, critical thinking, and digital literacy (where applicable).

The course integrates advanced movement skills, visual arts (including mosaic and painting), music (Western-style singing games, wind instruments, and melody), craftwork, and safety awareness. It promotes holistic development, cultural appreciation (local and Western influences), environmental consciousness, responsibility, and joy in learning. This programme prepares Grade 2 learners for seamless progression into Grade 3 Creative Activities and builds foundational life skills for lifelong creative expression.

Learning Objectives

Strand 1.0: Creating and Executing – Perform hopping in various directions, patterns, and combinations for improved agility and coordination; create detailed drawings and paintings using lines, shapes, colours, and textures; develop and maintain rhythm through body percussion, instruments, and voice while making repeating patterns; execute safe turning movements; design and construct mosaic artworks using local materials; create and perform simple melodies.
Strand 2.0: Performing and Displaying – Actively participate in and perform Western-style singing games with appropriate movements, costumes, and props; demonstrate controlled kicking for accuracy and distance; create plaited ornaments using recycled or natural materials; perform egg roll and swan balance activities for balance and body control; construct and play simple wind musical instruments; make three-dimensional models; sing a variety of songs expressively while displaying creations confidently in group settings.
Strand 3.0: Appreciation – Recognise and appreciate Western-style singing games and musical elements; demonstrate practical water safety awareness and environmental care; reflect on personal and peer creative processes.
Overall Competencies Developed: Creativity & imagination, communication & collaboration, self-efficacy, learning to learn, critical thinking, and appreciation of both Kenyan cultural heritage and global influences. Learners will internalise values such as responsibility, unity, respect, and love while addressing PCIs including safety, self-awareness, environmental conservation, and citizenship.

  • Class Size: Ideal 20–40 learners; adaptable for larger or smaller groups through pair/group work.
  • Safety & Inclusivity: Always prioritise learner safety (especially in hopping, kicking, balancing, and water safety strands). Adapt activities for learners with disabilities. Promote gender equity and cultural sensitivity (blend local Kenyan elements with Western-style games as per the curriculum).
  • Parental/Home Involvement: Parents/guardians are encouraged to support homework (e.g., practising hopping or songs at home) and provide simple materials.
  • Assessment: Continuous observation checklists, group performances, displays, portfolios, and self-reflection. Use the official KICD rubrics for core competencies and values.
  • Implementation Tips: Follow the suggested lesson sequence within each sub-strand. Integrate with other subjects (e.g., Mathematics for patterns and counting, Environmental Activities for materials and water safety). Store learner creations in a class portfolio for end-of-year exhibition.
  • Resources Provided: Full detailed lesson plans for all 210 lessons (with outcomes, materials, step-by-step activities, and assessment tools) are available upon request or as a complete package.
